John A. Abbott, a son of David B. Abbott, was born in 1844 in Sandy River Plantation.  On December 10, 1861, he enlisted from Rangeley in Company E, 13th Maine Infantry, with his father and uncle.  He received a disability discharge from the 13th on April 11, 1862, and on December 11, 1863, he enlisted from Rangeley in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry.  He died on September 24, 1864, at Barrancas, Florida, and is buried in the Barrancas National Cemetery (grave 5-0-425).

Moses P. Abbott, a son of John G. Abbott, was born about 1838 and lived in Sandy River Plantation.  He enlisted from Rangeley in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863.  He was mustered out with the regiment on December 6, 1865, at Barrancas, Florida.  He died about 1911, the year that his widow, Phebe (Hoar) Abbott, applied for a pension.  Moses Abbott is buried with his wife and a daughter at the Schoolhouse Cemetery in Rangeley.

Solomon Abbott, a son of David B. Abbott, was born in 1846 and lived in Sandy River Plantation.  He enlisted from Rangeley in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863.  He died on September 12, 1864, at Barrancas, Florida, and is buried with his brother at the Barrancas National Cemetery (grave 5-0-466).

Isaac R. Adams enlisted at 32 from Wilton in Company A, 8th Maine Infantry, on September 7, 1861, and was discharged for promotion on June 15, 1862.  He transferred at that time to the SC Volunteers and was promoted to Sergeant and to 2nd Lieutenant.  On January 2, 1864, he enlisted as 1st Sergeant in Company M, 2nd Maine Cavalry.  He was wounded and taken prisoner at Marianna, FL, and died of his wounds on September 7, 1864.  He is buried in the Barrancas National Cemetery (grave 5-0-422).

Joshua R. Adams enlisted at 29 from Wilton in Company M, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on January 5, 1864, and was wounded at Marianna, FL, on September 27.    He was promoted to Corporal and to Sergeant in 1864, and was listed as absent, sick, when the regiment was mustered out at Barrancas, FL, on December 6, 1865.

George B. Atwood, a 23 year-old from Flagstaff Plantation, theson of Benjamin and Harriet Atwood.  He enlisted on November 30, 1863,in Company B, 2nd Maine Cavalry.  He died on October 6, 1864, at Barrancas,FL, and is buried in the Barrancas National Cemetery (grave 5-0-565). His mother, Harriet, applied for a pension in 1869 and his father, Benjamin F., applied in 1893.

Charles C. Avery, son of Enoch and Sarah, enlisted  from Farmington in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  Later, he enlisted as a Corporal in Company B, 28th Maine Infantry, on October 10, 1862.  He was listed as sick at Warrington, Florida, on March 22, 1863, and he died in Boston on October 1st or 4th.  He is buried in the Blake Cemetery in Farmington Falls.

Columbus C. Avery enlisted at 18 from Farmington in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He was discharged for disability on March 12, 1862.

Americus V. Bacon enlisted from Wilton as a musician in the 8th Maine Infantry on September 7, 1861, and was discharged on November 1, 1862.  On December 11, 1863, he enlisted as a bugler in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, and was mustered out with the regiment on December 6, 1865.

Henry W. Bailey, 23, enlisted from Chesterville in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on August 29, 1862, and was discharged for disability on March 10, 1863.  He applied for a pension in 1883 and his widow, Rizpah, applied in 1911.

Augustus A. Bangs, son of Allen and Betsey, was born in 1845.  He enlisted from Farmington in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry;  was listed as sick in Washington, DC, in 1862;  and was discharged in 1864.

Edmund Thaxter Bangs, Jr. was born on January 22, 1835, and married Melvina Walker in Phillips in 1858.  He served in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, and in the Veteran Reserve Corps.  A shoemaker, he married Hannah Alma "Anna" Holley in 1871.  He applied for a pension in 1882 and was receiving $6 per month in August, 1883.  The pension was increased to $24 per month in 1889, and he received $500 back pay in addition.  Bangs and his family lived in Freeman until 1892, when their house burned, and then moved to Strong.  He died on June 11, 1894.   Anna applied for a pension in September, 1894, and died in 1916.  They are buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Farmington.

Edward F. Bangs, a 37 year-old resident of Freeman, enlisted September 12, 1862, in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry. He was listed as sick in Washington, DC, from April, 1863, and on June 15, 1864, he was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps.

John C. Bangs, a 29 year-old resident of Strong, enlisted September 12, 1862, in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, and transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on April 15, 1865 (estimated date).

Roscoe R. Bangs enlisted at 19 from Strong in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry.  He was discharged June 15, 1865.

Benjamin Bartlett Company E, 2nd Maine Cavalry.

Otis H. Barnard, 19, enlisted from Chesterville in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on August 29, 1862.  He was wounded on October 15, 1863, and was discharged on June 5, 1865.

John S. Bates, 21, enlisted from Wilton in Company C, 16th Maine Infantry, on August 14, 1862.  He was wounded at Fredericksburg, VA, on December 13 and discharged (estimated date) February 15, 1863.  On December 11, 1863, he enlisted as a Corporal in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry.  He died on January 3, 1864.

Lewis E. Bean, 23, enlisted from Wilton in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and deserted on January 24, 1864.

Roscoe G. Bean enlisted at 18 from Wilton in Company M, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on January 2, 1864.  He was promoted to Corporal in 1864, and mustered out on December 6, 1865.

William S. Bean enlisted at 18 from New Sharon in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry.  He died September 19, 1863, at the Washington, DC, General Hospital.

David A. Blake, 20, enlisted from Farmington in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He died in Augusta on February 2, 1862.

John Boodry, the son of Thomas Boodry, was born in 1847 and lived in Sandy River Plantation before enlisting from Rangeley in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863.  He died in New Orleans on October 19, 1864, and is buried at the Chalmette (Louisiana) National Cemetery.

Edward M. Bowley enlisted at 25 from New Sharon in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on August 30, 1862.  He died December 19 at Washington, DC.

Ansel Brackett was born on December 25, 1842, the son of Nathaniel and Sally (Worthley) Brackett.  He enlisted from Phillips in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863.  He was wounded and taken prisoner at Marianna, FL, on September 27, 1864, and died of his wounds the next day.

Asa W. Brackett was born on June 9, 1845, the son of Nathaniel and Sally (Worthley) Brackett.  He enlisted from Philllips at 18 in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863.  He was promoted to Corporal in 1864 and mustered out with the regiment on December 6, 1865.

Oliver Brackett, 41, enlisted from Chesterville in Company B, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on November 30, 1863, and was mustered out with the regiment on December 6, 1865.  He applied for a pension in 1885 and his wife, Susie, applied in May, 1898.

Enoch A. Brackley was born in Freeman in 1835, the son of Abel and Sarah (Merrill) Brackley.  He enlisted August 14, 1862, in Company C, 16th Maine Infantry, and was discharged (estimated date) January 15, 1863.  On December 19, 1863, he enlisted in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry.  He was listed as sick in 1864 and was reported as having deserted in 1865.  He worked as a carpenter in Freeman and in Boston, MA, and applied for a pension (date illegible) from Massachusetts.  He died in Portland.  His wife, Abby (Miller) Brackley, and a child are buried in the Starbird Corner Cemetery in Freeman.

Alanson V. Brooks, an 18 year-old from Farmington, enlisted in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, in August, 1861.  He re-enlisted in March, 1864, and deserted in April.   He applied for a pension on June 25, 1880, and died in 1939.  He is buried in the Center Meeting House Cemetery in Industry.

Augustus D. Brown, 21, enlisted from Chesterville in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and re-enlisted on December 28, 1863.  He was wounded on September 16, 1864, and was discharged (estimated date) on June 15, 1865.  The date of his pension application is not legible.  His widow, Mary, applied for a pension in 1912.

John A. Brown, 25 of Woodstock, New Brunswick Canada, Enlisted 2nd Maine Cavalry, Company A December 22, 1863 ~ Quota of Dennysville, Maine

Charles F. Bubier, a brother of Benjamin Jr., was born in Lewiston in 1836.  On August 18, 1862, he enlisted from Dallas Plantation in Company G, 17th Maine Infantry.  He is listed as receiving a disability discharge on March 16, 1864, but before that date he enlisted in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry on December 11, 1863.  He was mustered out at Barrancas, Florida, on December 6, 1865.  He moved to North Jay after the war.  He died in 1910 and is buried in the North Jay Cemetery with his wife, Susannah (Searles) Bubier, who died in 1901.

Sewall Merrill Bubier, a brother of Horace, was born on October 28, 1830, in Lewiston and married Mehitable Bubier in 1856.  He was a farmer in Dallas Plantation.  He served in Company D, 28th Maine Infantry, which was mustered out in August, 1863.  On January 22, 1864, he enlisted from Winthrop in Company I, 2nd Maine Cavalry, and was mustered out with the regiment at Barrancas, Florida, on December 6, 1865.  He changed his last name to Flagg in 1867.  He applied for a pension in 1880 and died in on January 1, 1892.  His widow applied for a pension in 1893.  He is buried in the Bubier Cemetery in Dallas Plantation.

William S. Bullen enlisted at 21 from Farmington in Company B, 28th Maine Infantry, on October 10, 1862.  He was promoted to Corporal in November and was mustered out on August 31, 1863.  He enlisted in Company C, 1st Maine Cavalry, on February 8, 1864, and died a prisoner at Salisbury (NC) Prison on November 17, 1864.  His mother, Mary E., applied for a pension in June, 1869.

Hosea P. Bump was born on September 12, 1836, in New Vineyard and enlisted from Dead River in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He re-enlisted on December 28, 1863, and was discharged on June 15, 1865.  He applied for a pension on August 7, 1865.  He died in Farmington on April 14, 1899, and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Farmington, with his wife, Mary Paine Bump (1840-1899).

John Burbank, was born in 1826.  He enlisted from Wilton as a Corporal in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and died in New Orleans "in service of his country" on September 24, 1864.  He is buried with his wife, Sophia (1824-1869) in the East Wilton Cemetery.

Fred Calden, 18, enlisted from Wilton in Company M, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on March 18, 1864.  He was listed as sick in 1864 and was mustered out on May 22, 1865.

Cyrus Case, 23, enlisted from Farmington in Company E, 24th Maine Infantry, on October 13, 1862, and was promoted to Sergeant on November 1.  He was mustered out on August 25, 1863.  On February 8, 1864, he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company C, 1st Maine Cavalry.  He was promoted to 1st Sergeant that year and was mustered out at Petersburg, VA, on August 1, 1865.  He applied for a pension in 1892 from Kansas and his widow, Faustina, applied from California on December 18, 1916.

N. Kimball Chase, a 26 year-old from Weld, enlisted in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and was mustered out with the regiment on December 6, 1865.  He died in 1907 and is buried with his wife in the East Wilton Cemetery.

Collamore Purrington Clayton was born in 1843, the son of Bartholomew and Mary Clayton.  He enlisted from Farmington in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and was mustered out on November 25, 1864.  He went west after the war and is believed to have died in Wisconsin.

Edmund B. Clayton, son of Bartholomew and Mary Clayton, enlisted at 28 from Farmington in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He was wounded on August 20, 1862.  He was captured on June 24, 1864, at St. Mary's Church, VA, and died of scorbutus at Andersonville Prison in Georgia on October 6, 1864.  He is buried at the Andersonville National Cemetery, grave # 10421. The Strong GAR post was named for him.

Rufus M. Clayton, brother of Edmund, was born in Freeman in 1839.  He married Hannah E. Foster in 1857 and was living in Salem by 1860.  He enlisted from Farmington in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on September 12, 1862, and was discharged (estimated date) on June 15, 1865.  He went west after the war and died on January 4, 1900, in Minneapolis.

Benjamin H. Corser enlisted at 18 from Phillips in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863.  He was mustered out with the regiment on December 6, 1865.

Nathan Cutler was born on January 7, 1845, the son of John and Abby (Belcher) Cutler of Farmington.  He entered Harvard but left to enlist as a 1st Lieutenant  on the Staff of the 28th Maine Infantry on October 6, 1862.  He was mustered out with the regiment on August 31, 1863.  On November 16 he enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant on the Staff of the 2nd Maine Cavalry, and was promoted to Major in June, 1864.  He was wounded and taken prisoner at Marianna, Florida, on September 27, and was a prisoner for nine months, three of them at Andersonville Prison in Georgia.  He returned to command the post at Marianna and was mustered out with the regiment on December 6, 1865.  In 1867 he was appointed Commandant of the U.S. Military Asylum at Togus and served there for two years, after which he took up the practice of law in New York City.  He applied for a pension on June 30, 1880, and married Mrs. Louisa F. Merrill of New York on October 4, 1884.

Charles B. Daggett, 21, enlisted from Farmington as a Sergeant in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on December 24, 1863.  He deserted at Greenville, Louisiana, on May 25, 1864.

Frank B. Daken enlisted at 21 from Wilton as a Corporal in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and was discharged for disability on November 22, 1862.  On November 28, 1864, he enlisted again from Wilton in Company E, 1st Maine Sharpshooters;  was promoted to Sergeant;  transferred to Company E, 20th Maine Infantry on June 21, 1865;  and was mustered out on July 16, 1865.

John Dalton, 25 of St. John, New Brunswick Canada, Enlisted 2nd Maine Cavalry, Company C December 3, 1863 ~ Quota of Vassalboro, Maine

Joseph Dobbins, 34, enlisted from Farmington.  He served in the 1st DC Cavalry and transferred on February 19, 1864, to Company A, 1st Maine Cavalry.  He died on October 19 in Washington, DC.  His widow, Merey E., applied for a pension on December 8, 1864.

James H. Dow, 27, enlisted from Wilton in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and re-enlisted on December 28, 1863.  He was promoted to Corporal in 1862 and reduced to Private in 1864.  He was discharged on August 17, 1865.  He may be the James H. Dow who died March 19, 1869, and is buried in the East Wilton Cemetery.

James J. Dow, 18, enlisted from Wilton in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and was discharged on November 16, 1865.

Daniel B. Doyen was born in Avon and enlisted at 27 from East Livermore in Company G, 1st Maine Cavalry, on October 31, 1861.  He was promoted to Corporal in 1862.  He was taken prisoner at Brandy Station, VA, June 9, 1863, and later exchanged.  He was mustered out on November 25, 1864.  He submitted a pension application from Kansas in 1891 and his widow, Harriet A., applied from there in 1902.

Joseph N. Duchesne, 19 of Ottawa, C.E. Canada, Enlisted 2nd Maine Cavalry, Company C December 21, 1863 ~ Quota of South Berwick, Maine

William Franklin Dudley was born in 1841 and enlisted from Kingfield in Company F, 1st Maine Cavalry, on October 19, 1861.  He was mustered out on November 25, 1864, and applied for a pension in 1865.  He is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Kingfield.

John R. Eaton enlisted from Wilton as Assistant Surgeon in the 2nd Maine Cavalry on February 3, 1864, and was mustered out with the regiment on December 6, 1865.

Gilman B. Elder, 23, enlisted from Wilton in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and received a disability discharge on January 26, 1863.

Joseph S. Ellis, 36, enlisted from Wilton in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863.  He died in New Orleans on September 11, 1864.

Rufus G. Ellsworth was born in 1835, the son of Jeremiah and Roxanna (Billings) Ellsworth.  He enlisted from Freeman as a musician in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He re-enlisted on December 28, 1863, and was mustered out at Petersburg, VA, on August 1, 1865.  He  applied for a pension from Kansas in 1890 and his widow, Mary A., applied in 1911.

Carlton P. Emery enlisted at 18 from Freeman in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and re-enlisted December 28, 1863.  He was promoted to Sergeant in 1865 and mustered out on August 1, 1865.

George C. Emery enlisted at 18 from Industry in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on December 26, 1863, and was mustered out August 1, 1865.

Horace B. Emery enlisted from New Sharon at 21 in Company M, 1st Maine Cavalry, on August 26, 1862.  He was promoted to Farrier in November, 1863, and was discharged June 30, 1865.  He later submitted a pension application from Massachusetts.

Zebulon M. Emery, a 22 year-old resident of Industry, enlisted November 1, 1861, in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry.  He was discharged for disability on February 11, 1862.  His wife, Ann H. Johnson (1840-1875) is buried in Industry.

John B. Farrington, 27, enlisted from Wilton as a Sergeant in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and was mustered out on December 6, 1865.  He died in 1908 and is buried with his wife, Orrah (1844-1922), in the East Wilton Cemetery.

Gorham Parks Fassett was born in Freeman on July 23, 1839, the son of George and Mary Ann Parks.  He enlisted from Abbott as a Farrier in Company M, 1st Maine Cavalry, on October 31, 1861.  He was taken prisoner at Frederick, Maryland, in 1863, but was exchanged and rejoined his company.  He was furloughed in November, 1863, and married Myra T. Ames on January 10, 1864.  He transferred to Company C on February 8 and was taken prisoner again later that year.  He is said to have died at Andersonville Prison in Georgia on March 3, 1865, but does not appear on the lists of prisoners or burials there.  He is also recorded as being discharged from his regiment on April 28, 1865.

Alexander Fraser of Farmington enlisted at 22 from Masardis in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He re-enlisted on December 28, 1863, and deserted on April 4, 1864.

John Seneca French, enlisted on Oct 14th 1861 from Franklin, Maine. Assigned to Company M on Nov 5, 1861. Served until Nov 4, 1864.

William F. Fuller, 19, enlisted from Wilton in Company G, 1st Maine Cavalry, on October 19, 1861.  He was promoted to Corporal in 1862, reduced to Private in 1863, and discharged on October 31, 1864.  He died on July 20, 1884.  His widow, Dora A. Howard, applied for a pension from New York in September, 1908, and died in 1927.  They are buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Phillips.

Seneca R. Gardner  was born on December 14, 1825.  He enlisted from New Vineyard in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and was mustered out on December 6, 1865.  He died on November 2, 1903, and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Farmington.

Charles Gay was born on August 4, 1837, the son of Edward and Sally (Keyes) Gay.  He enlisted from Farmington as a Corporal in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and was discharged for disability on February 22, 1862.  He married Emma Palmer on September 15, 1871, and in 1885 was a shoe manufacturer in Auburn.

Edward Gilkey was born on May 11, 1837, in Freeman, the son of John and Mary (Storer) Gilkey.  He enlisted from Freeman in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and died of wounds at Petersburg, VA, on July 7, 1864.

Charles O. Gordon enlisted at 21 from Phillips as a Sergeant in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in 1863 and to 1st Lieutenant in 1864.  He was taken prisoner at Saint Mary's Church, VA, on June 24, 1864, and was discharged May 15, 1865.  He applied for a pension in 1866.  His widow, Eunice, applied in 1881.

Levi W. Gould, a 24 year-old resident of New Sharon, enlisted on November 1, 1861, in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry.  He was wounded on May 11, 1864, at Spottsylvania Court House, VA, and was mustered out on November 11, 1864.  He applied for a pension in 1894 and his widow,  Mary, applied in 1904.  He is buried in the Weeks Mills Cemetery in New Sharon.

Nathaniel W. Gould, 18, enlisted from New Sharon in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on February 25, 1864.  He died on April 15 (estimated date).  His father, Levi, submitted a pension application in 1868.

Noah Emery Gould was born in September, 1843.  He enlisted from New Vineyard in Company E, 24th Maine Infantry, on October 13, 1862, and was mustered out on August 25, 1863.  He enlisted in Company L, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 24, 1863, and was mustered out on December 6, 1865.  He married Alma Weymouth of Freeman on October 21, 1868.  She died in 1881 and he married Mary Adeline Toothaker, who died in 1909.  Gould was a farmer in Freeman and died on February 20, 1930.  He is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Phillips.

Michael J. Hamlin, 21 of St. John, New Brunswick Canada, Enlisted 2nd Maine Cavalry, Company C December 3, 1863 ~ Quota of Vassalboro, Maine

Lyman Hammon, 21, enlisted from Freeman in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and deserted on February 5, 1862.

Jason F. Harris, 23, enlisted from New Sharon in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on September 4, 1862.  He was killed at Saint Mary's Church, VA, on June 24, 1864.

Almore Haskell enlisted at 28 from Industry in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and was discharged on February 2, 1862.  He applied for a pension in 1890.

Lorenzo J. Heath Aged 34 from Castine, ME; mustered into Company C, 1st DC Cavalry on 2/10/64. Joined Co E, 1st Maine cavalry at transfer of 1 DC into 1st Maine. Wounded at Dinwiddie 3/31/65; discharged for disability 6/1/65.

David L. Hindle, 21, enlisted from New Sharon in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1863, and received a disability discharge on January 7, 1863.

Nathaniel Brackett Hoar was the son of Joseph Hoar and worked on his father's farm in Rangeley before the war.  He enlisted from Rangeley in Company B, 7th Maine Infantry,on September 23, 1861.  He was promoted to Corporal in 1861 and received a disability discharge in 1863.  On February 23, 1864, he enlisted in the 2nd Maine Cavalry, which was organized in November, 1863, but had not left the state.  He was mustered out with the regiment at Barrancas, Florida, on December 6, 1865.  He married Hannah E. Lamb in Rangeley in 1867, and they went to California, where Hannah died.  At some time he changed his name to Nathaniel B. Nile, and by 1920 he had returned to Maine and was living with his nephew in Salem.

James Hogan, 27, of St. John, New Brunswick Canada, Enlisted 1st Maine Cavalry, Company A October 10, 1862 ~ Deserted July 6, 1863

Thomas Hollis, an 18 year-old resident of Dead River, enlisted November 1, 1861, in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry.  He died at Camp Penobscot in Augusta on January 3, 1862, and is buried in the West Kingfield Cemetery.  His mother, Didamia Browning, applied for a pension in 1863 and later moved to Michigan.

Freeland N. Holman, 26, enlisted from Temple in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He was promoted to Corporal in 1862;  re-enlisted on December 28, 1863; and was promoted to Sergeant in 1864.  He was taken prisoner in 1864 and died in 1865 in Savannah, GA.  His mother, Olive Holman, applied for a pension in December, 1866.

William A. Holmes, 22, enlisted from Wilton in Company D, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on February 2, 1864, and was discharged on May 22, 1865.

Silas G. Hovey, 24, enlisted from Farmington on the quota of New Sharon in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on September 4, 1862.  He was taken prisoner at Gaines Crossroads, VA, on October 12, 1862.  He died in Farmington on May 12, 1864.

George Howland, a 23 year-old resident of Phillips, enlisted December 11, 1863, as a Saddler in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry.  He was mustered out with the regiment on December 6, 1865.  He may be the George Howland, son of Isaac,  who died in 1868 and is buried in Avon.

Charles E. Humphrey was born on April 24, 1821.  He enlisted from Jay in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and was mustered out on December 6, 1865.  He died on February 13, 1907, and is buried in the North Jay Cemetery.

George Dexter Huntoon was born in Wiscasset in 1832 and married Catherine Haley in Rangeley.  On the 1860 Census he was a Rangeley farm laborer with four children.  He enlisted as a Sergeant in Company C, 2nd Maine Cavalry Regiment, on December 11, 1863.  He was mustered out with the regiment at Barrancas, Florida, on December 6, 1865.  After the war, "Deck" Huntoon became a guide and hunter in the Rangeley area.  He applied for a pension in 1880 and from around 1886 was the caretaker for the Dickson family property on the island in Rangeley Lake; he is mentioned frequently in Elizabeth Foster's book, The Islanders.   Huntoon's  wife died in 1884 and he died in 1925.  They and three of their ten children are buried in Evergreen Cemetery (Z-4-1) in Rangeley.

Frederick F. Hussey, 31, enlisted from Phillips as a Sergeant in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863.  He died on September 18, 1864, at Barrancas, FL, and is buried at the Barrancas National Cemetery (5-0-410).

Almon J. D. Jacobs was born in Freeman and enlisted from Minot.  He served in the 1st DC Cavalry and transferred as a bugler to Company K, 1st Maine Cavalry, on February 16, 1864.  He died at Alexandria, VA, on February 15, 1865.

Reuben Butterfield Jennings was born on March 26, 1814, the son of Eliphalet Jennings, a veteran of the American Revolution, and his wife, Mary (Butterfield) Jennings.  He married Diana White of Skowhegan in 1838.  He enlisted from Farmington as a Captain in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, but resigned because of illness on January 15, 1862, while the regiment was still at Augusta.  He enlisted as a Hospital Steward in the 28th Maine Infantry on October 6, 1862, but was discharged for disability in February, 1863.  He died on August 1, 1882.

Ebenezer S. Johnson, a 21 year-old resident of New Sharon, enlisted November 1, 1861, in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry.  He was promoted to Sergeant in 1863 and to QuarterMaster Sergeant in 1864, and was mustered out on November 25, 1864.  He applied for a pension in 1873; his widow, Hattie, applied in 1902.

John O. Johnson, a 44 year-old farmer from Roxbury, enlisted in Company G, 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry, on February 21, 1865, and was mustered out on July 20.

Eleazer Jordan, a 26 year-old from Kingfield, served in the 1st DC Cavalry and transferred to Company A, 1st Maine Cavalry, on February 19, 1864.  He was taken prisoner and paroled sometime in 1864, and was discharged on June 5, 1865.

Frank Keep enlisted from Hudson, Wisconsin, as a Corporal in Company D, 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry.  He was promoted to QuarterMaster Sergeant and mustered out on February 10, 1865.  He is buried in the North Jay Cemetery.

Alpheus G. Kelley, 18, enlisted from Phillips in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863.  He was promoted to Corporal in 1864 and was mustered out December 6, 1865.  He submitted a pension application from Kansas in 1884, and his widow, Ida, applied from there in June, 1887.

Charles W. Keyes enlisted at 32 from Wilton as a Sergeant in Company B, 28th Maine Infantry, where he served as a hospital steward and was mustered out on August 31, 1863.  On December 11 he enlisted in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, and was discharged for promotion on March 2, 1864.  He enlisted on April 2 as a 1st Lieutenant in Company E, 32nd Maine Infantry, and was discharged on September 27.  He enlisted on January 20, 1865, as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company F, Maine Coast Guard Artillery, and was discharged July 7, 1865.  He died in 1906 and is buried in the East Wilton Cemetery with his wives, Juliette (d. 1868) and Harriet (d. 1925).

Benjamin Kilkenny was born on May 16, 1839, in Freeman, the son of Thadious and Catherine (Luce) Kilkenny.  He enlisted from Freeman in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on December 25, 1863, and was discharged on June 15, 1865.  He was married to Helen Tripp and lived in Freeman.  He died on May 31, 1915, and she died in 1918.  They are buried in the West New Portland Cemetery.

Willliam W. Kimball, 21, enlisted in Company G, 1st Maine Cavalry, on March 24, 1863, and was discharged on June 20, 1865.

Columbus C. Laine was born in New Sharon and enlisted from Skowhegan in Company H, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 5, 1861.  He deserted on May 11, 1862.

Charles W. Latham enlisted at 21 from Phillips as a Saddler in Company A, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He deserted on February 10, 1862.  His widow, Agnes, applied for a pension from Pennsylvania after 1899 (date partly illegible).

George E. Lewis, 18, enlisted from Farmington in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on March 10, 1864, and was discharged on July 24.

Martin L. Locklin, 20, enlisted from Wilton in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and was mustered out on December 6, 1865.

Marcellus Palmer Lovejoy was born on July 22, 1822, in New Vineyard, the son of Abiel and Esther (Collins) Lovejoy.  He married Sophia Stubbs in Kingfield in 1848.  He served in Company D, 28th Maine Infantry, from October 13, 1862, to August 31, 1863.  He later served in the 1st DC Cavalry and transferred on March 10, 1864, to the 1st Maine Cavalry.  He was wounded on June 22, 1864, and died of his wounds in New Portland later that year.  Sophia died in Salem in 1883.

Rufus N. Lovejoy of Farmington enlisted at 21 from Chesterville in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863.  He was discharged on October 24, 1865.

Charles B. Luce was born in Industry on December 8, 1843, the son of Ezekiel and Nancy (Norcross) Luce.  He enlisted from New Sharon on December 26, 1863, in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry.  He died on June 26, 1864, at Mount Pleasant General Hospital in Washington, DC.

Jason L. Lufkin, 24, of Farmington, served in the DC Cavalry and transferred to Company C, 1st Maine Cavalry, on February 8, 1864.  He was discharged on April 8, 1865.

Edward A. Mace enlisted in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry on September 12, 1862.  He was wounded at Dinwiddie Courthouse and was discharged on June 15, 1865 (estimated date).

John A. Marston, 21, enlisted from Farmington in Company M, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on January 19, 1864.  He was listed as sick, in hospital, in 1864, and deserted from the hospital on October 8.

Lendell C. Marston, 19, enlisted from Wilton in Company M, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on January 2, 1864.  He was promoted to Corporal in 1865 and was mustered out on December 6.

Albert McCrillis, 27, enlisted from Wilton in Company G, 12th Maine Infantry, on November 15, 1861.  He was listed as sick in Portland later that year and was discharged at Lowell, MA, on December 29.  He enlisted in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and deserted on February 4, 1864.

Thomas McGinley, a 39 year-old resident of Springfield, enlisted in Company E, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 9, 1863, and was discharged on May 23, 1865.  He died on July 21, 1892, and is buried in the Cushman Road Cemetery, Springfield, with his wife, Lydia, who died in 1911 aged 74.

James McGuire, 22 of St. John, New Brunswick Canada, Enlisted 2nd Maine Cavalry, Company C December 3, 1863 ~ Quota of Vassalboro, Maine

Ezra McKeen, a 21 year-old Farmington resident, enlisted on November 1, 1864, in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, and re-enlisted on December 28, 1863.  He was promoted to Wagoner in 1864 and to Sergeant in 1865.  He was mustered out at Petersburg, VA, on August 1, 1865, and applied for a pension in September, 1882.  He died in 1902 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Phillips with his wife, Frances, who died in 1900.

John Mealler of Kingfield served in the DC Cavalry and transferred to Company A, 1st Maine Cavalry on February 19, 1864.  He was taken prisoner on September 16, 1864, and is listed as deserting to the rebel service in October.

Marcellus H. Merrick enlisted at 23 from Wilton in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863.  He died on September 17, 1864, at Barrancas, Florida, and is buried in the Barrancas National Cemetery(grave 5-0-497).

William O. Merrow, 27, enlisted from Farmington in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and deserted on February 11, 1862.

Charles A. Moore, 21 of Richmond, New Brunswick Canada, Enlisted 2nd Maine Cavalry, Company E December 10, 1863 ~ Quota of Rockland, Maine; deserted December 18, 1863

James Morrison, Jr., a nephew of Cyrus, was born in 1841.  He enlisted from Phillips as a Corporal in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and was promoted to Sergeant in 1865.  He was mustered out with the regiment at Barrancas, Florida, on December 6, 1865. He died in 1884 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips, with his wife, Louise, who died in 1908.

George G. Mossman, 34, enlisted from Farmington in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on September 10, 1862, and was discharged for disability on March 24, 1863.

Judson A. Mossman, a 29 year-old carpenter from Roxbury, enlisted in Company E, 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry, on February 5, 1863.  He was taken prisoner at Dranesville, VA, on February 22, 1864, and was paroled November 26, 1864, at Annapolis, MD.  He was mustered out on July 20, 1865, at Fairfax Court House, VA.

Charles S. Noble, 28, enlisted January 4, 1864, in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, and was mustered out on December 6, 1865.

Solomon H, Odell, 28, enlisted from Farmington in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He re-enlisted on December 28, 1863;  was taken prisoner as St. Mary's Church, Virginia, on June 24, 1864;  and was discharged on July 22, 1865.  He died on February 9, 1882, and is buried in the Bragg-Porter Hill Cemetery in Farmington.  His widow, Emma E., applied for a pension in April, 1882.

Charles Franklin Packard was born in 1847, the son of Charles and Hannah Packard of Farmington.  He enlisted from Limerick as a Musician ("drummer boy") in Company A, 27th Maine Infantry, on September 30, 1862, and was mustered out on July 17, 1863.  His 1880 pension application also lists service in Company L, 2nd Maine Cavalry, and Company F, 102nd U.S. Infantry.  He died in 1897 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Farmington.  His widow, Julie E., submitted a pension application from New York on June 28, 1897.

James W. Painter of Farmington enlisted at 30 from Masardis in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He re-enlisted on December 28, 1863, and deserted on April 4, 1864.

Charles W. Palmer, a 20 year-old from Wilton, enlisted on January 2, 1864, in Company M, 2nd Maine Cavalry.  He died on August 20 in New Orleans.

Frank W. Parker was born in 1836 and enlisted from Farmington in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He received a disability discharge on June 17, 1862.  He applied for a pension in 1889 and died in 1920.  He is buried in the New Vineyard Notch Cemetery with his wife, Mary F. Witham, who also died in 1920.

Simon W. Parlin was born in Wilton on April 7, 1837.  He enlisted from Phillips, enlisted October 13, 1862, in Company D, 28th Maine Infantry;  was promoted to 1st Sergeant in November; and was mustered out on August 31, 1863.  He enlisted on December 11, 1863, as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, and was discharged on May 15, 1865.  He married Sarah Hoyt in 1866, and was a farm hand and teacher.  He later moved to Boston and was a book keeper for American Cultivator Company.  He applied for a pension in 1898 from Massachusetts and died on June 1, 1925.  His widow, Sarah, applied in 1925 from Massachusetts.  Parlin is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Phillips.

Charles A. Partridge of Farmington enlisted at 18 from Westbrook in Company K, 1st Maine Cavalry, on January 23, 1864.  He was promoted to Corporal and was mustered out at Petersburg on August 1, 1865.

Leonard P. Partridge, 23, enlisted from Phillips in Company B, 28th Maine Infantry on October 10, 1862, and was promoted to Corporal in April, 1863.  He was mustered out with the regiment on August 31, 1863.  He died on June 10, 1866, and is buried in the Bragg-Porter Hill Cemetery in Farmington with his wife, Mary, who died in 1875 at the age of 34.

George W. Pease, 34, enlisted from Wilton in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and was a bugler in 1864.  He was mustered out on December 6, 1865.

John H. Perkins, a 22 year-old resident of New Sharon, enlisted in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and died of disease on May 1, 1864.

Bradford Pickens enlisted at 24 from Wilton as a wagoner in Company M, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on January 2, 1864.  He died on September 17 at Barrancas, Florida, and is buried in the Barrancas National Cemetery (grave 5-0-407).

James Pinkham of Industry served in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry.

Samuel Pinkham, 19, enlisted from Industry in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on September 3, 1862, and was discharged on June 15, 1865.  He may be the Samuel Pinkham who died in May, 1866, and is buried in the Ick Norton Cemetery in Industry.

Wellington Pinkham, 22, enlisted from Industry in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and died on May 24, 1862, at Meridian Hill, VA.

John K. Plummer, 20, enlisted from Phillips in Company A, 8th Maine Infantry, on September 7, 1861, and was discharged on October 27, 1862.  His pension application in 1892 also lists service in Company B, 2nd Maine Cavalry.

Thomas Powers of Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada, Enlisted 2nd Maine Cavalry, Company E December 21, 1863 ~ Quota of Rockland, Maine

Alonzo Pratt, a 21 year-old from New Sharon, enlisted in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and re-enlisted on December 28, 1863. He was taken prisoner at Spottsylvania Courthouse, VA, on May 11, 1864, and died a prisoner  on August 18.

Benaiah W. Pratt was born on February 13, 1840, the son of Jeremiah and Sophronia.  He enlisted from New Vineyard in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and re-enlisted on December 28, 1863.  He was promoted to Corporal in 1864 and was wounded at Malvern Hill, VA, on August 16, 1864.  He was discharged on June 5, 1865.  He married Flora Emily Handly of New Vineyard in 1874.  He submitted a pension application in 1865 and died on October 8, 1920.  He is buried in the New Vineyard Notch Cemetery with his wife, who died in 1921.

Oliver P. Pratt, 21, enlisted from Farmington in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, in September, 1862.  He died in Frederick, Maryland, on November 17.

Evander S. Prescott, 26, enlisted from Wilton as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company B, 28th Maine Infantry, on October 10, 1862, and was mustered out with the regiment on August 31, 1863.  On December 11, he enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, and was mustered out on December 6, 1865.  He applied for a pension in 1872.

Lewis Prescott, 31, enlisted from Phillips in Company D, 1st Maine Cavalry, on August 30, 1862, and was discharged on May 8, 1865.  He applied for a pension in 1885 and died on June 7, 1910.  He is buried in the Field Cemetery in Phillips with his wife, Eunice, who died in 1913 at the age of 80.

Luther Quint was born on April 4, 1841, the son of Joshua and Lucinda Quint of Lexington.  He enlisted from there on November 5, 1861, in Company H, 1st Maine Cavalry, and was discharged on January 25, 1862.  On August 17, 1863, he enlisted in Company F, 11th Maine Infantry,  was promoted to Corporal in 1865, and was mustered out on February 2, 1866.  He married Betsey Gould, who died in 1911, and Mary Elizabeth (Weymouth) Churchill.  He died on September 21, 1927, and is buried in the East New Portland Cemetery.

Hannibal H. Ranger enlisted at 18 from Wilton as a musician in the 8th Maine Infantry on September 7, 1861, and was discharged on November 1, 1862.  On January 1, 1864, he enlisted in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry as a bugler and was mustered out  with the regiment on December 5, 1865.  He died on April 30, 1886, and is buried in the East Wilton Cemetery.

Alvin L. Reed, 22, enlisted from Dead River as a Wagoner in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He was discharged for disability on May 12, 1862.

George E. Reed, the son of Stillman and Martha Reed, enlisted at 19 from Leeds in Company G, 1st Maine Cavalry, on October 19, 1861, and re-enlisted on February 1, 1864.  He was killed at Reams' Station, Virginia, on August 25, 1864, and is buried in the Hinkley Cemetery in Livermore.

Samuel Reed, 24, enlisted from Wilton in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and was mustered out on December 6, 1865.

Warren Reed, a 26 year-old from Farmington, enlisted on the quota of Wiscasset as a Bugler in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 8, 1863.  He died in Greenville, Louisiana, on August 3, 1864.

Hosea P. Ripley of Canton married Vesta Bray Peterson in 1838 in Freeman.  He enlisted from there in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on December 28, 1863.  He was wounded at Saint Mary's Church, VA, on June 24, 1864, and was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on June 15, 1865.  He applied for a pension in 1865, and Vesta applied from Massachusetts in 1900.

Reuel H. Rogers, 19, son of Francis and Rhoda, was born in Industry and enlisted from there in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on December 26, 1863.  He was discharged on June 15, 1865.  He died on September 12, 1883, and is buried at the Center Meeting House Cemetery in Industry.

Reuben W. Ross, the son of Elbridge Ross, was born in 1842 and was a laborer on his father's Rangeley farm in 1860.  He enlisted from Rangeley on December 12, 1863 in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry Regiment.  He was mustered out with the regiment at Barrancas, Florida, on December 6, 1865.  He married Melissa Brackett in 1863;  she died 1880 at the age of 36.  Ross applied for a pension 1882.  He married Helen Haley in 1884 and married Matilda Campbell, who was 14 years old, in 1899.  He died on September 26, 1928.  Ross, his first wife Melissa, and two of their children are buried in the Wilbur Cemetery, Rangeley.

Allen Rowe, son of Asaph Rowe, was born in 1834 in Madrid and moved with his family to Rangeley in 1854.  In 1860, he was a laborer on the Henry Kimball farm in Rangeley.  He was married to Martha Boodry, who died in 1863 at the age of 20 years, 10 months.  In March, 1864, he enlisted from Rangeley in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry Regiment.  His gravestone states that he died on July 1, 1864, aged 30 years and 10 months, at Brazier (Brashear) City, Louisiana, and according to his service record he died in a hospital.  Rowe and his wife are buried at the Nile Cemetery, Dallas Plantation.  Their daughter, Mary E. Rowe, applied in 1881 for a pension based on his service.

Samuel Saunders of Farmington enlisted at 19 from Falmouth in Company B, 25th Maine Infantry, on September 29, 1862, and was mustered out on July 10, 1863.  On December 11, he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry.  He was mustered out with the regiment at Barrancas, Florida, on December 6, 1865.  He applied for a pension in 1891 or 1892; his widow, Clara, applied in 1907.

Samuel Scott, 25 of Port William, New Brunswick Canada, Enlisted 1st Maine Cavalry, Company E November 2, 1861 ~ Deserted February 11, 1863

Oscar Searles enlisted at 18 from Strong in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863.  He died in the regimental hospital on November 30, 1864, and is buried at the Barrancas (Florida) National Cemetery (grave 5-0-535).

Justus Skeetup, 43, enlisted from Wilton in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863.  He died in hospital July 30, 1865.   J. Adams, Guardian, submitted a pension application for a dependent minor later that year.

Charles S. Sleeper, 20, enlisted from Wilton in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and was discharged for disability on June 13, 1865.  His pension application in 1887 also listed service in Company K, 3rd Maine Infantry.

Henry H. Smith, son of Sylvanus and Jerusha, was born in November, 1838.  He enlisted from New Portland as a Corporal  in Company M, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on January 2, 1864.  He was promoted to Sergeant in 1864 and to QuarterMaster Sergeant in 1865.  He was mustered out with the regiment on December 6, 1865, at Barrancas, FL, and died on August 16, 1866.  He is buried in the Village Cemetery in Strong.

Leroy A. Smith was born in 1839.  He enlisted from Phillips as a Sergeant in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry Regiment, on December 11, 1863.  He was a blacksmith in Rangeley after the war.  He applied for a pension in 1890 and died on January 6, 1897.  His widow, Mary E., applied for a pension in 1897;  she died in 1916.  Both are buried in Evergreen Cemetery (Z-1-11), Rangeley.

William R. Snow, 26 of Woodstock, New Brunswick Canada, Enlisted 1st Maine Cavalry, Company E August 16, 1862

Augustus Soule, son of George Soule, was 18 when he and his father enlisted from Rangeley in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863.  He died on May 19, 1864, in Greenville, Louisiana, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery (W-16), Rangeley.  His mother applied for a pension based on his service in 1869.

George Soule was born in 1818 and was married to Sarah (Doyen) Soule.  In 1860 he was a farmer in Rangeley Plantation with nine children;  he lived in the Greenvale area west of Greenvale Stream.  He enlisted from Rangeley in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and was mustered out with the regiment in December, 1865.  After the war he worked as a guide in Rangeley.  In 1868 he built Camp Henry, a fishing camp, on Rangeley Lake near Oquossoc and in 1874 opened another camp at Haines Landing, a forerunner of the Mooselookmeguntic House.  He sold the Camp Henry property in 1878, and the Mountain View House, which Soule and his wife managed, was built on the site. He also established a buckboard service between the lakes along the present Carry Road.  Soule died in 1882 and his wife died in 1902.  They are buried in Evergreen Cemetery (W-16), Rangeley.

Hiram B. Spencer was born in 1834 and was married to Emily Niles of Freeman.  He enlisted from Salem, MA, in Company H, 1st Massachusetts Cavalry, on September 25, 1861, and was discharged on November 11, 1864.  Emily died in 1889 and he died in 1895.  They are buried in the Burbank/Nile Cemetery in Freeman.

Theodore S. Sprague, 19, enlisted from Farmington in Company B, 28th Maine Infantry, on October 10, 1862, and was discharged for disability on December 30.  On December 11, 1863, he enlisted in Company C, 2nd Maine Cavalry.  He died at Barrancas, Florida, on September 7, 1864, and is buried in the Barrancas National Cemetery (plot 5-0-427).

Gustavus A. Stanley, 30, was commissioned a Captain in Company B, 28th Maine Infantry, on October 10, 1862, and was mustered out with the regiment on August 31, 1863.  He enlisted as a Captain in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and was mustered out on December 6, 1865.  He died in Pensacola, Florida, on January 16, 1884.

Isaac Starbird, son of Moses and Sarah (Dolbier) Starbird, was born on February 18, 1840.  He enlisted from Freeman on November 1, 1861, in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry.  He was promoted to Corporal in 1862 and reduced to Private in July, 1863.  He was mustered out on November 25, 1864.  One source states that he died of wounds in 1864, but he applied for a pension in 1883.

Albert G. Starr enlisted at 28 from Wilton in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and was mustered out on December 6, 1865.

Gilbert Stetson enlisted at 43 from Phillips in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and died on August 7, 1864, in New Orleans.

Cyrus L. Stevens was born in Strong on December 28, 1841.  He enlisted from Freeman in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and was discharged on June 15, 1865.  He married Mary Jane Welch of Freeman in 1865 and was a farmer.  He died on February 4, 1909, and is buried with his wife in the West Freeman Cemetery.

Samuel F. Stoddard, Jr., of Farmington, enlisted in the Band of the 8th Maine Infantry on September 7, 1861, and was discharged on November 1, 1862.  He enlisted on December 11, 1863, as a Sergeant in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, and was wounded at Mariana, Florida.  He transferred as a 1st Lieutenant to Company D, Coast Guards Infantry, on January 9, 1865.  He applied for a pension in December, 1865, and died in Minnesota on December 16, 1875.

George W. Stoyell, 21, enlisted from Farmington in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on September 30, 1864, and was discharged on August 29, 1865.

Alanson F. Sweet, 18, enlisted from Strong in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and was mustered out on December 6, 1865.

Constantine Taylor, 24, of Farmington was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He was promoted to Captain in 1862; to Major in 1864, and to Lt. Colonel (Brevet) in 1865.  He was mustered out on August 1, 1865, in Petersburg.

Albert Thompson, 22, enlisted from Farmington in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He was promoted to Corporal in 1862; re-enlisted in December, 1863;  was promoted to Sergeant in 1865;  and was mustered out on August 1, 1865.  He may be the Albert Thompson who died in 1899 at 59 and is buried in the Russell Cemetery in Temple.

Henry A. Thompson was born on February 5, 1835, at Mount Vernon.  He enlisted from Dead River Plantation in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He was wounded at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, and was mustered out on November 25, 1864.  He was married twice, to Rose (last name not known) and to Mary Collins, who survived him.  He applied for a pension in 1869 and died at Starks on June 27, 1914.  He is buried in the Gay Cemetery in Farmington.

Jeremiah Thompson of Farmington enlisted at 35 from Presque Isle in Company E, 1st Maine Cavalry, on October 19, 1861.  He was promoted to Corporal and to Sergeant, but was reduced to Private in 1864.  He was mustered out on November 25, 1864.   He may be the Jeremiah Thompson who died in 1870 and is buried in the East New Portland Cemetery.

Benjamin F. Tibbetts of Farmington enlisted from Industry as a Sergeant in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863.  He died at Barrancas, Florida, on August 11, 1864.

Mark Trafton, 21, enlisted from Roxbury in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He re-enlisted on December 28, 1863, and deserted on April 4, 1864.

Dexter W. True enlisted at 23 from Turner in Company I, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 22, 1863.  He was promoted to Corporal  and to Sergeant in 1865 and was mustered out on December 6, 1865.  His wife, Celestia, died in 1869 at 23, and he died on November 23, 1876.  They are buried in the Twin Bridges Cemetery in Livermore.

William True, Jr. was born in Phillips on November 28, 1846, the son of William and Louisa (Pratt) True.  He enlisted at 18 from Avon in Company D, 28th Maine Infantry, on October 13, 1862, and was mustered out on August 31, 1863.  On December 11, he enlisted in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry.  He was promoted to Corporal in 1865 and was mustered out on December 6, 1865, at Barrancas, FL.  In 1874 he went to California searching for gold, and after returning to Maine worked on the railroad and was a trapper in Dallas Plantation.   He was married to Addie Beedy.  He  applied for a pension in 1880 and died on Frbruary 17, 1916.   He is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Phillips.

Zenas Vaughan was born in Freeman on December 17, 1829, the son of Elias and Calista (Webster) Vaughan.  In 1855 he married Esther Putnam in Strong.  He enlisted in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in 1862, and promoted to Captain and transferred to Company M in June, 1863.  He was taken prisoner at Spottsylvania Court House, VA, in May, 1864, and held for 11 months.  After the war he owned a store and was Sheriff of Somerset County.  His wife died in 1897 and he died in Portland on August 18, 1908.

Ansel Walker enlisted at 20 from Wilton in Company B, 28th Maine Infantry, on October 10, 1862, and was mustered out on August 31, 1863.  He enlisted in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and was mustered out on December 6, 1865.

Ruvillo R. Walker, son of Jeremiah and Sally, enlisted from Wilton at 18 in Company M, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on February 4, 1864, and died in the hospital on January 5, 1865.  He is buried in the East Wilton Cemetery.

Justus Webster of Farmington enlisted as a Corporal in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861.  He was promoted to Sergeant in 1862 and mustered out on November 25, 1864.  He may be the Justus Webster, Esq., who died in 1914 at 74 and is buried in the Webster Cemetery in Farmington.

Isaiah Welch, 32, enlisted from Freeman in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on December 19, 1863, and was discharged on June 16, 1865.  He died on June 8, 1915, and is buried in the Village Cemetery in Strong with his wife, Hannah (1838-1917).

Nathaniel P. Wells, 19, enlisted from Phillips in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on September 29, 1864 and was discharged on August 29, 1865.

Jesse Wentworth, a 23 year-old Farmington resident, enlisted on November 1, 1861, in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry.  He was discharged for disability on November 22, 1862.  He died on August 24, 1867 and is buried in the Hunter Cemetery in Strong.  His widow, Elvira, applied for a pension in (?) 1869.

Edmund W. Whitney was born on July 19, 1840.  He enlisted from Farmington in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on March 1, 1862, and was discharged on February 28, 1865.  He married Mary B. Orr in Phillips and was a farmer in Strong and Farmington.  He died on March 20, 1892, and she died in 1905.  They are buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Farmington.

Frank W. Whitney, 21, enlisted from Farmington in Company E, 1st Maine Cavalry, on October 19, 1861, and died in Washington, DC, on April 15, 1862.

Harris Wilbur, a 19 year-old from Phillips, enlisted December 11, 1863, in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, and was mustered out on December 6, 1865.

Arthur I. Withey, a 26 year-old resident of Eustis Plantation, enlisted as a Corporal in Company M, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on January 2, 1864.  He was promoted to Sergeant, reduced to Private, promoted again to Corporal and finally to Sergeant in 1865.  He was mustered out on December 6, 1865.  His pension application in 1873 also lists service in the 26th Maine and the 6th Massachusetts.

Hiram Wood was mustered into Company F, 1st Maine Cavalry, on January 19, 1864, and died in Washington, DC, later that year.

Ephraim W. Woodman enlisted on September 7, 1861, as a Captain in Company A, 8th Maine Infantry, and was promoted to Major and  transferred to staff on December 14.  He was promoted to Lieutanant Colonel and was discharged on March 6, 1862.  He enrolled as a Colonel in the 28th Maine Infantry on October 6, 1862, and was mustered out on August 31, 1863.  He enlisted as a Colonel in the 2nd Maine Cavalry on December 18, 1863, and was mustered out with the regiment on December 6, 1865.

Alonzo T. Wright, a 21 year-old from Weld, enlisted in Company L, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 1, 1861, and re-enlisted on December 28, 1863.   He was wounded and taken prisoner at Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA, on May 11, 1864, and died of wounds the following day.  He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Phillips.  His mother, Mary, applied for a pension in 1865.

Ervin E. Wright, 19, son of Israel and Sarah, enlisted from Phillips in Company F, 2nd Maine Cavalry, on December 11, 1863, and died on September 3, 1864, at Barrancas, FL.  He is buried at the Bragg-Porter Hill Cemetery in Farmington.

Ward S. Yeaton, a 37 year-old resident of New Vineyard, enlisted in Company M, 1st Maine Cavalry, on February 14, 1864, and was discharged on June 20, 1865.  His widow, Sarah, applied for a pension in December, 1897.

Havannah Young, 19, enlisted from New Portland in Company H, 1st Maine Cavalry, on November 5, 1861.  He died at home on August 14, 1863.  He is buried in the North New Portland Cemetery, where his gravestone says:  "He was in six hard fought battles and twenty six scrimmages".
