Message to Federal Troops

TO All FEDERAL PARTICPANTS, ENGAGEMENT AT BURKITTSVILLE

I would like to extend my thanks and complements to those who participated with the Federal Forces during Engagement at Burkittsville, September 9-11, 2005.

Everyone in both the infantry and cavalry, of all ranks, did an outstanding job. In action against the Confederates, your ability to move quickly and effectively, proved decisive in our skirmishes over the two days. The willingness of everyone to work in concert enabled us to complete our march in on Saturday in good order, with a minimum of problems.

In addition an extra thank you is in order for allowing yourselves to be filmed by Caro Thompson and her crew from Vermont Public TV. Several times Caro told me that she was impressed by the “look” we had: hot, tired, dirty, grim. Things she had read about in soldier’s memoirs, but had never seen at reenactments. Caro also said her crew got outstanding footage over the two day. Hopefully that footage will set a new standard for Civil War documentaries.

Again, my thanks and complements on a job well done.

Sincerely,

James D. Owens, Bvt. Major

4th Vermont Volunteer Infantry
