Samuel E. Griffin was a 20-year-old resident of Charlotte in Washington County when he enlisted in Company D of the 1st Maine in October 1861.
In 1862 he was detailed as orderly to General Nagle.
He was wounded severly in the charge at Aldie on June 17, 1863 and spent 8 months in the hospital before being discharged for disability at the Mansion House Hospital in Alexandria in February 1864.
